Dr. Gutterson’s Sonoma Diet is based on the Mediterranean Diet. This diet plan also comes in a book entitled, “The Sonoma Diet: Trimmer Waist, Better Health in Just 10 Days!”.  She said that many diet plans failed, because they do overlook on the importance of the flavor. As calories and portion amount are important in the diet plan, Dr. Guttersen promotes the use of the “top ten power foods”. These powerful foods which are considered as best foods in losing weight yet, taking in as much of nutrition in your body as follows:
  • Whole grains like brown rice, barley, bulgur, oatmeal, wild rice, whole wheat bread, crackers, and pasta are very rich in niacin, riboflavin, iron, zinc, magnesium, thiamin, Vitamin E, fiber, protein, and carbohydrates.
  • Almonds are considered as healthiest nuts. A small quantity of almonds can give you a healthy amount of Vitamin E and Magnesium, fiber, calcium, potassium, phosphorous, iron, monosaturated fat, and protein.
  • Bell peppers are very rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, fiber, Vitamin K, Manganese, Folate, Postassium, Vitamin B1, and Vitamin E.
  • Tomatoes are a good source of Lycopene, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A.
  • Broccoli is considered as an anti-cancer food and rich in calcium, iron, magnesium, Vitamin A, and Vitamin C.
  • Grapes which are rich in polyphenols, can help fight heart illnesses, bad cholesterol, bad lumps.
  • Spinach contains lutein, niacin, zinc, protein, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K and B6

While you will not count your calories, with Sonoma Diet you are required to exercise a portion control where you will need to use a 7-inch plate during breakfasts, 9-inch plate during lunch and dinner. The reason for this is to help you prevent from eating too much but without being too conscious of counting your calories. Dr. Gutterson introduces her three waves:
  • The First Wave, which is similar to the Atkins Diet,  is a ten-day meal plan where you will be restricted on taking sugars, refined flour and all other  sweet and processed products that are easily absorbed in the blood stream. Here, you will be able to eat some vegetables, lean meats, seafood, some dairy products and grains. You can take 3 servings of olive or canola oil, a small quantity of nuts, black coffee, and tea.  It is the hardest stage but when you are successful on this, you will make to Wave 2.
  • Second Wave is the heart of the diet plan where you will be allowed the same foods as in the Wave 1 and as additional, fruits, more vegetables, yogurt (fat-free), some sugar-free foods, limited dark chocolates, honey, and some wine. You will remain in this stage until you have obtained your ideal weight. There will be a slow loss of weight where you can expect for half pound until one and a half pounds every week. This is also the stage where you will be coached to learn healthy eating habits that you can practice all your life.
When you have reached your ideal weight, then you will move to Wave 3
  • Third Wave is the maintenance stage where you are expected to sustain your healthy eating habits and lifestyle by taking the same diet plans in the Waves 1 and 2 with lots of fruits and vegetables with some butter, dark chocolates, desserts, and soda. By this time, you will be able to formulate your own menus basing from what you have learned in the Sonoma Diet.
As a supplement to this weight loss diet plan, you will also be able to discover that sleep is an importance factor to have a healthy lifestyle. How much does it cost to lose weight with Sonoma Diet? Membership fee is $4 every week and if you join the Sonoma Diet program, you are required to buy a minimum of 5 weeks which amounts to $20. You will be billed every quarter but you have to inform them if you want terminate your membership. Members will be able to access to the message boards and connect with other members, you can interact with a certified nutritionist, personalized plans, recipes, and wine list. Dr. Guttersen’s book costs $20 which includes the entire foods list. The only disadvantage with this plan is that it needs a lot of cooking and if you are a busy person, you might have troubles being in this diet program.
