South Beach Diet Plan was originally formulated by an American Cardiologist, Dr. Arthur Agatston MD. He designed this plan for his patients with heart diseases. However, he observed that a side effect of his diet plan was to lose weight. The diet was not a low-carb or a low-fat diet but it centered on eating the right food and the right fats that adhere to the GI diet. It constrains the use of carbohydrates in the first 2 weeks before bringing in the low glycemic index diet. South Beach Diet Plan is based on the belief that it is the processed carb that makes you fat and reducing them in your diet will make you lean and slender. Dr. Agatson suggests a diet that consists of high lean protein with lots of green vegetables, nuts, and legumes.
South Beach Diet Plan prevents you from overeating and improves your metabolism. Its new program, called South Beach Supercharged Plan, prevents you to take foods rich in carbohydrates that can increase your blood sugar. High blood sugar prompts the release of insulin which lowers the sugar level, thus, your energy level will also fall. This will make you crave for more foods. Worst scenario will be when your body becomes resistant to insulin that will lead to poor fat metabolism.

- Phase 3 is considered as maintenance part of the South Beach Diet program. By this time, you are used to take healthy and right foods everyday of your life.
